A few pics from the weekend of the 4th

Andyh Jul 12, 2009 06:27 PM

Here are a few finds from a camping trip on the 4th of July weekend. I spent most of the time on a friend’s boat - always better then owning your own , but did get a few hours of herping in. The lizards were out in abundance, but the only snake find was a pattern-less shed about 30” long. There were some additional herps, but unfortunately I got my camera wet mid-way through the weekend.

Juvenile Northern Alligator Lizard

A lightly colored (for Oregon anyway) Western Fence Lizard

I believe this is a Hadrurus spadix.

Very cool. Liked the scorpion. Are you in CA? If so, what part?

Thanks.

Nope, I live up in the Seattle area so most of my herping is up in the Northwest. These pics of from the Lake Billy Chinook area (Central OR).

Nice Finds Andy!

Your Northern Gator is actually a Southern you can tell by the yellow eye color and heavy banding with the white tipping.

Your scorpion is a Paruroctonus boreus they can be highly variable and dark ones are not uncommon.

Ahh, the Northern Scorpion. Thanks Nate. My knowledge of arachnids (and arthropods) is pretty basic, but I've got no excuses for my miss on the Alligator lizard. Must have done a little too much drinking on the boat. Haha

I wasn't aware that the range of the Southern variety extended up into Oregon and Washington; however, a quick google search confirmed your identification. Good catch. I'm always impressed by the amount of expertise on this forum.
