Questions about white throats

lexxxx300 Jul 13, 2009 06:22 AM

I had a beautiful adult white-throat many years ago. He topped out at 4ft and was 8 years old. My wife loved him because he stayed small and my sister in law bought a black throat that is now over 6ft. My wife wants to buy a white throat micro but all the research that I have been seeing says that they are the "true blackthroat" monitors. Does anyone have any adult pics of the Micros or know how large these animals get. I know not all white throats get as large as black throats. A 2 ft difference is a major one for my wife.

Thanks,
Alex

The picture of Kai in your photos is a blackthroat, I decided to look when I seemed to remember the other photos of him being posted in the past.
Most of the BTs I had grew to 4.5-5ft from 1-2ft in a years time or less, they can grow like theres no tomorrow. Currently my female cross is ENORMOUS, the last time I measured her she was 6ft 8 inches (been a while at that size), shes now approaching 9 yrs old.
Try a cape banded WT, they take longer to grow and seem to stay at 4-5ft at most. I had one that was around 7-9 yrs old when he was given to me at 3ft long, in a few months he was 4ft.

Yes that is a black throat and belong to my sister-in-law. I don't have any pics of my white-throat but it was beautiful light gray with banded. Im 100% positive it was a normal varanus aby aby. The micro subspecies I have no experience with. How big do they get? Are they infact Eastern white throats. I have a feeling these are the white-throats that get up to 6ft.

Thanks,
Alex

I don't know if this help or if it is even accurate. It states 1.5 meters.

I remember seeing pictures from Pete Zupichs collection showing what looked like a darker pattered Tanzanian WT (black striping and spots with a very light white background)as a Microstictus.
I think they can get huge, Mark Bayless had a Microstictus female that was 6ft 2 inches long. I think as an adult they get darker, or a bit darker.
If you want one that stays smaller try to find a beautiful cape banded WT, their pattern and colors are amazing in person, and they seem to stay around 4ft or so.
Regardless of size they are neat animals to have.

Heres a new pic of my micro. One good thing I've noticed about mine is he doesnt smell like a cape or blackthroat. LOL. Cage isnt as smelly either.
