Java Moss and aquatic plants

Mothi Sep 15, 2003 10:13 AM

Where is the best place to buy java msos (not java fern)? I am also considering other aquatic plants for my primarily aquatic frog. I am thinking about banana plants. Any suggestions? The water level will be about 4" deep with lights above for the plants.

Just look around at local fish stores for java moss. That is how I got some. Once you have some it grows like mad. I have had bad luck with banana plants; they just die while all of my other plants thrive. What kind of frogs are you keeping? I have many plants such as anubius, java moss, java fern, crypts, bulbits, Amazon sword, and a crinum bulb in with my ADFs.

Sorry about the butchered spelling of plant names.

I am getting about 10 Occidozyga Lima within a week. I had them over 5 years ago and miss having them so I decided to buy some again. They spend 90% of their time just floating on the water surface.

I keep my Occidozyga with some bamboo, peace lillies and some sort of semi-aquatic grass that a friend gave me. Do you have any info on Occidozyga Lima? I have only been able to find one web page that gives a little info about their care. I have had mine about half a year and would like to breed them. Thanks.

There is not much information available when it comes to Occidozyga. I guess they are just not popular, but rather cheaply priced frogs when you do find them. My shipping on 10 frogs is going to cost me as much as the frogs themselves.

All I remember is that I kept them tropical at 78-80F an aquatic tank with enough water so their toes can touch the bottom substrate. I used gravel and I guess I will use it again...unless you have any suggestions. I had adults and fed them every 1-3 days medium sized crickets. I had don't remember if I had UV lights or natural plants or not. Females are very round and bigger than the males. I did notice males calling (funny little sounds for little frogs). Don't recall if it was typically early morning or late evenings. It was during the winter time, but the room their cage was in was temperature controlled. I can't remember much else specifically. I really love these little guys and hope to try breeding. If I can't get them to breed, they would be just great to watch anyways.

Share any info you have about them that you observed. You can email me at zippidde@hotmail.com if you like.

Where can you buy java moss? It is more of a clump than a few. You can buy it here. (this place is selling it for a terristral moss, but it is the same stuff)
