Niles and Argus

vinny230 Jul 13, 2009 11:15 PM

I have an argus monitor about 1 foot including tail and two nile monitors about 6-8 inches including tail in an enclosure half water half land. is it safe to house them together if well fed? how long will they survive together?

No!!!!!!!!!!

They are are from to separate continents and have separate requirements.Argus monitors are also known to be very greedy when it comes to there feeding response, where as Niles when young tend to be very shy.Your Niles could very well starve

Rather than worrying about keeping them together temporarily, you should start focusing on their permanent enclosures...they're going to quickly be needing their adult cages. If "well fed", they'll be ready for adult cages in about 5 or 6 months with room to grow for another 6 months after that.

If you plan to keep the 2 niles together, aim for an enclose of maybe 8X10 or 10X10, maybe even larger than that. For the Argus, maybe 6X8 or 8X8. Some of the Argus & Nile experts here could probably give some better info on enclosure size.

Mike is right what are your plans to house two Niles and an Argus. The Niles if kept properly will reach over 4 feet in the first year.I have a Nile that I got in September and he is just under 4 feet

To house two Niles together I would recommend at least 16x8.There is a guy Roger who is an expert on Niles he has 4 and two of them are adults, and his enclosure are huge

Here is my Nile monitor he is housed in 8x4x6 and I think that is too small for one adult let alone two

They may not hurt each other right now, but they may. In the next few months you can have a treo of three plus foot long monitors and in a little over a year have a 4.5 foot argus and two 7 foot niles. I hope you have plenty of room and money to house and feed them.

No, if you cant or dont want to hose them separately then dont have all of them.
Id be more worried about the argus killing the baby niles in a hurry, at 6-8 inches long they would be an easy meal for a 1ft plus argus.
