Regarding Dwarf Burmese Pythons...

Chris DeLay Sep 15, 2003 10:55 AM

I have been working with some small Burmese for over 5 years now. The animals I have been working with are not as small as the ones below, however, they are small. The female pictured on eggs is under 7 ft. That clutch consisted of 13 viable eggs. To this day she is still under 8 ft. and very healthy. I have mixed the albino gene into this line and they make the most stunning albinos you have EVER seen. The albinos almost look like they have an increase in red pigment. They also stay small, which is a plus for some keepers. None of the Burmese I have produced from this line have gotten over 8 ft.

It's interesting to see what comes from the even smaller ones and what mutations can be put back into them. Good luck.

Sincerely,
Chris DeLay

Is that a baby or an adult? The reason I ask is that it has the same "bug-eyed albino baby" look to it.

Man chris those ar every nice.. The albinos too.. I have lots of questions and would also love to see what would come from breeding a dwarf to your small line.. Anyway some questions:

Did you start off with 1 small adult and breed normal sized into it?

How big are the babies?

What happens when a normal size is bred into the small line? Do all of them stay under 8'?

I think your line is great.. Sorry to make you come out with them sooner than you wanted.. I remember you kept saying they were top secret..

Thanks nd hope to see your reply soon..

Thanks for the kind comments. I think they are spectacular snakes, especially the albinos. I bred a normal size albino male into the original small female. The reason we picked up the female in the first place is because she was pied. She had several large pure white blotches over her body. Within 2 years of owning her the white slowly disappeared. The white areas were not from an injury or burn, the scales were perfectly healthy. She almost went through a calico phase that some retics do; to where they will go calico and then change back to normal. I started with the one female. All the babies I have produced with her have stayed under 8 ft. and they are products of the small female to the normal size albino. One of the areas our snakes differ are with the eggs I believe. My small female laid 13 eggs, but they were just about normal size, a tiny bit smaller. The hatchlings were normal size, but they stay shorter and fatter than normal babies. The babies from the small female look more like blood or ball pythons than Burmese. They don't grow in length very quickly at all, no matter what their feeding regiment. This year she will be bred to a very nice granite male. Hopefully we will have some het granites coming from her. I will keep you posted on the progress of these.

Good luck with your projects and please feel free to e-mail me privately if you want.

Sincerely,

Oh, thank you for your words, we are both lucky and we both have projects that noone else has right now.. Both of these should pull the burm market back. Some like huge burms, but thats one reason you see burms running the streets and burms that you cant give away.

ANyway, the eggs, yes that is a big difference. My dwarf line's eggs are smaller than ball pythons eggs and I would quess that the babies are near the size of balls too. I cant wait to see, will have pictures and video of the eggs hatching.. I will be sure to email you and possibly doing a breeding project together in the future..

Cool..

also you said your 8' female laid 13 eggs, our 6' female laid 21 eggs. Were your eggs full size or alot smaller than a normal size females eggs? I wonder if thats one of the main differences between the dwarves and the small line.. Anyway, thanks again for sharing..
