New born rat died

markru Jul 14, 2009 04:50 PM

Hi,

We had an 11 rat litter yesterday. One of the babies was half of the size of the other 10. Later today we discovered it dead in the litter. Is there anything we could have done to have saved it. We had some moms that had no litters that may have been able to have nursed it. Any ideas on why the one was so small?

Thanks,
Mark

Runt...

Only in human society do we exert effort to save the weakest, survival of the fittest.

There are reasons beyond our control for which animals die, likely in the case of a single animal there is nothing you can do. In some case mothers even banish the weak/frail young and concentrate their effort on only the ones worth saving.

Just like mis-carriages except it and move on, nature has a way of resolving its own problems.

Cheers

Baby rats die ALL the time. Something you'll need to get used to. Nothing; ZERO you could have done.
