snake room

texasviper619 Jul 14, 2009 09:00 PM

I am planning on building a seperate room in my garage for all my snakes, for thermoregulation. It will be 6x7. Are there any musts or must nots I should be aware of? Has anyone else done this? They are starting to take up too much space in the house and my wife is starting to "complain"

same thing here, i built a 12x12 main room with a 8x12 "extra space". i used green board vs reg. sheetrock to handle the high humidity, and insulated the walls good so i could create the perfect micro-climate. also put your plug outlets high on the wall so they will be above your racks and cages, hope this helps...

If I built one from scratch I would want space for a work table, a big sink, the freezer, a dishwasher, and a beer fridge. 6x7 does sound a bit small.

I'd say my snake room is approx 12x12 (external building on property originally meant to be a shop that I stole from my hunny for my snakes, LOL!), but with a bit of irregularity... ie a separate doorway to the rat room that has to be left clear and a space where a fireplace was once connected and a large brick column remains where it connected. It is NOT enough room, even for my fairly small-midsize collection! Mostly because I want to expand and my holdbacks are growing up.

I could keep stacking up to the ceiling, but I am only about 5'4 and it's a pain pulling anything over a certain size out of a cage I can barely get into with a stool! I also prefer a bit of extra space in my snake room, I don't like it too cramped or cluttered. Plus, I'd agree with wanting a work-table and sink in there if I had the room built especially for my animals. Maybe next time... *sigh* Oh to have planned it out myself...

Good luck with yours, please post photos when you finish it!
