Dry Eastern Eggs...

TJ. Jul 15, 2009 11:31 PM

Well...Here's what I found when I returned home yesterday. (I dug them up out of the hatch medium, so the black stuff you see is mulch) They're only half size now. Actually appear to have shrunk a bit since yesterday. Any chance for these, yet? This is a major bummer! I've been waiting for an opportunity to get a clutch of wild Easterns for years and years now, and finally it happens ...just with really bad timing. I've got them in with a batch of Tangerine Honduran eggs at 75-80 degrees now. Is there still a 50/50 chance? Looks like gravid Eastern Milks go for temps over moisture.

I had a clutch of lizard eggs look like that this year and I placed a damp paper towel over them for two or three days. The eggs swelled back up and I removed the paper towel. Half of the eggs hatched out healthy babies and the other half grew mold and went bad. Hope your eggs recover and you get some babies. Good luck.

I'd do the paper towel trick Joe offered up, I've heard this can help, hope they aren't too far gone.

The best thing Ive found is to use Wax Paper or Freezer paper put over the pile with a couple small holes or slits in it. That will retain the mosture and not dry out like a paper towel. Also add a little water under the eggs. Should bring them back up to full.

One more vote for a moist paper towel over the eggs for a few days and they will absorb the moisture and should be fine.

good luck!

I decided to go with the damp moss in the tupperware container. Just checked on the eggs, and the 5 on the bottom have now completely swelled back up to normal level (and a little larger) The 5 on top are still wrinkled, but shiny white and flexible. Absolutely right...Will not throw them out until Christmas. Or until they turn tie-dye rainbow colors and my eyes start to water! I must confess I was being slightly sarcastic when I asked if snake eggs could be "re-hydrated". Well, it happened again: Just when I go and think I know it all... a bunch of nice guys come around and proves there's still a few things to learn! Thanks again. (I'll post more pics of their progress) TJ.
