The replies are worth reading, too.
I would be very interested in the population dynamics inferred by the collecting data such as: Date, Locality, Size, Sex, Gut [contents], Population Density, etc.

So a posse of 5 to 18 people is going to have a non-negligible effect on a population of difficult-to-find snakes that is estimated to be almost two hundred thousand?

And if these snakes were such dangerous man-eaters like the politicians are claiming, why would they let people go after them armed only with "clubs?"

Just received a message from USARK stating they support the hunt and were instrumental in organizing it. Members are involved and I know a couple of them. I say bravo and will gladly offer my time to assist in the hunt if needed. I'm sure an official post will be made shortly.

MIGHT be good public relations-otherwise an extremely silly idea.

The reptile community needs to be seen as part of the solution, instead of part of the problem.

I hope none of us are naive enough to think this program will make the slightest difference in python numbers-let alone eradicate them.

When it's a game of spin, marketing, and politics -- an engaged cooperative solutions based attitude is what's called for.
You've got to seize every opportunity available, to make your case.

When there is an opportunity for greater stakeholder participation you've got to go for it. Especially if empirical data can be acquired to take the discussion out of the realm of rumor, myth, and legend and into the light of factual data.

Even animal rights activists aren’t feeling creepy about the search and-destroy mission.

“We understand that the pythons are a serious problem in the Florida Everglades,” said Animal Rights Foundation of Florida spokesman Nick Atwood.

Professionals should know how to club the snakes to death humanely, Atwood said.
