Regular plate glass or safety glass ?

gigantor Jul 16, 2009 02:11 PM

Hello,
I built a 24"x24x72 cage for my papuan python, and already put on the two sliding doors made from regular plate glass.
Someone told me I should have used saftey glass.Im not sure its really nesessary, what do you guys think?
The tank has nothing in it , so he really cant wedge himself between a decoration and the glass, only between the back wall and the glass, which is 24"
thanks Bob

If you take into accounts a great many things you can make your own decision.

-Animals of excess weight with strong strike ability
-Cages in which the animal can lift the glass and pop it out of the track
-Accident prone keeper
-Cage placed in public view within and open room = Safety Glass

If you meet the above you need Safety Glass.

The thing is you just never know when you are going to drop the broom, put a hook through the glass, or miss a flying football or other object. Combined with certain animals I would rather pay the extra for a feature comfort.

Remember if and when you break a Glass door, Safety Glass will still perform its function while you wait for a new piece. Everything else will not.

Cheers

I have always been surprised at how rarely glass shops recommend saftey and/or tempered glass and somehow I doubt that they would recommend it for the size you mentioned. However, it's your peace of mind that matters.

For what it is worth, I have heard that you can have clear window film applied to glass and that will give it some of the strength advantages of safety glass. I don't know what kind of film, how much it costs or where to get it, however. But it's worth looking into since you already have the glass panels.
