Need Help! Boyd possibly ill?

13ig13all Sep 15, 2003 12:19 PM

On Friday I saweveral mites on my boyd and I immediately took action by cleansing the boyd with a povidine/water solution and a thorough washing of its tank enclosure. I replaced its water container with a new one, and removed all wood items from the tank. A few hours later I observed that the boyd went directly to the new water container and stayed their for the greater part of the day.

The following day, I completely dis-infected and cleaned the boyd's tank enclosure with soap and bleach. I put in new paper as substrate and placed a new cardboard hide box. I cleanedtheroom throughly where the snake is housed (Lysol, Purell).

When I woke up this morning I saw that the boyd was once again back inside the water dish. My container is filled about 2.5" high. I checked the water dish but I did not see any mites. I checked the boyd and did not see any mites either. Why is the boyd still going to the water dish? I fear that the boyd is ill but how can I be sure?

Thank you in advance for the help.

I Mno expert
but I understand that they can get mites under their eyelids (or what passes for eyelids)
also insect bites tend to cause some level of discomfort
Someone else will et you know if all you have done up to this point is sufficient to get rid of the infestation (as with fleas or cockroaches, if you see one, it is TO MANY)
Good luck taking care of this

The snake will actually dip its entire head in the water dish for a while then resurface several seconds later. I dont know if he actually enjoys it or if hes doing it to defend itself against possible mites. I gave him a very close inpsection including the tank enclosure, but did not see any mites.

Today is his weekly feeding, so I will be curious to see how he reacts to the the feed. I think it will be a tell if he is sick or not. Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks in advance for the help..

Not sure how relevant or possible this is but I have heard of mites causing them to go into a rapid shed cycle to try and rid themselves of the irritation. It might be he's getting ready to shed because of that, hence the soaking. Is he showing any signs of going into shed?
