OT: ID the snakes

natsamjosh Jul 16, 2009 09:57 PM

Been slow lately, figured I'd make a post. Here are some pics I got at the serpentarium in Wilmington, NC. First person to ID all five snakes gets bragging rights for a year.

I'm sure I'll get an "F" on this exam, but here goes anyway!

1) Eyelash Viper
2) Blue Racer
3) Green Ratsnake

Aubrey,

If it makes you feel any better, you get an "A" for effort and an "A" for speed, and I would not have done any better if the roles were reversed. I probably would have said exactly what you said.

I'll give you full credit for number 1, and 1/2 point for number 5.

Actually, it looks like number 5 is messed up. I didn't see any ID plaques outside the cage other than Black Tailed Rattlesnake, so I assumed that's what both of them were. Given the other responses and some web surfing, though, looks like only the one in the back is a BTR. I'll have to e-mail the serpentarium to confirm if the other one is indeed a Mojave!

Thanks,
Ed

1# Eyelash viper

2# Black mamba

3# Western green or jamesons mamba, not sure

4# PNG Coastal? Looks like it.

5# The Rattler I am a bit uncertain of, depending of wich one you mean? The one on the back is a black tail (molossus) the one in the fron could be a Mojave?

This migt be kind of cheating since I´ve worked as a reptilekeeper in one of Swedens largest zoos.

Anyway, fun to do..

/Dennis

So whats number 4??

natsamjosh Jul 17, 2009 02:59 PM

>>So whats number 4??

#4 is a Taipan. I don't know what subspecies, though. And at the very least the rattlesnake in the back (in pic #5) is a Black Tailed rattlesnake.

Sorry, did not write taipan. But it sure looks like a PNG (papua new guinea) coastal taipan.

Good game..

Bragging rights! Yea! :P

natsamjosh Jul 17, 2009 04:06 PM

No worries, I knew you implied taipan...

But you may have to be excluded from the next challenge due
to your profession!

Thanks,
Ed

I consulted the protest committee. Okay, we'll call it a tie. You both have bragging rights.

Ed,
...Good game. I have been busy and arrived too late. I did not know there was a serpentarium in Wilmington. What part of town?

Jeff,

I have some more pics, I'll try to post them soon. The serpentarium is on the waterfront in the old part of town.

The name of it is Cape Fear Serpentarium if you want to look it up. Neat place.

Thanks,
Ed
