Hurricane Emergency Precautions

hgiddings Sep 15, 2003 01:03 PM

I live in an area that will be effected by the hurricane. It isn't supposed to be too bad, just a lot of rain and wind but in case the power goes out for more than a little while what can I do to keep my snakes warm other than putting them in a pillow case and keeping them warm with my body heat?

You can go to most sporting stores that carry hunting items and get some of those packs for hand warming etc. Pack the snake in a bag and put it in a cooler. Don`t forget to open it once a while to let some air in an make sure the temps are OK.

If it really gets cold.......Often it stays fairly warm durning those things.

You could get a gasoline powered generator for your house. Then if the power goes out, turn that on and your snakes will be warm and you will be able to watch tv. i am getting one for my house because sometimes the sump pump will quit, but when I move my snakes to the basement, basement flooding will become a major concern. Other than that, i can't think of anything. Hope this helps.

I live in the same area (not sure how close I am to you, but I know we're in the projected path.) Anyhow, I don't think it's going to get cold enough to bother the snakes, even if the power is out for an extended period of time. It's just not that cold this time of year.

Now...a winter-storm power outage...that would make me nervous!

Its still warm this time of year. The snakes will be fine with out a heat spot. If you had eggs incubating then i might be thinking about getting a back up generator etc.
I live in south florida and i have a generator back up with window unit a/c and power surge protectors in case power goes out when i have eggs incubating. But other then that id be worried about flooding and wind damage more then anything else. These big hurricanes, if your not directly impacted can spur alot of tornadoes. just play it safe.
