Time for Male Female rat breeding

markru Jul 18, 2009 12:37 PM

Hi,

Can anyone tell me the amount of days you would want to leave a male in with a female rat to guaranteed conception? I want to leave males in for between 5 to 7 days.

Thanks for your help...

I would (and do) leave my males in all the time. All my males and females live together 100% of their lives (as well as babies until they're weaned).

I am not communal breeding and I do not have the luxury of having a bunch of male breeders. Do you think if I keep a male in for one week my female will get pregnant? I will learn in time I guess but I hate missing a cycle and litter because of my rotation sequence.

Thanks again,
Mark

A week would probably work just fine.

When I breed in your manner I had a pool of Rats to shoose from.

I kept 6-7 bins of females 2-3 bins each and a few Males. I would rotate on a weekly basis the females between the bins. By that I mean the entire rack was on a breeding rotation, 7 bins one male in each bin. 2-3 females in each bin. As females became really pregnant they would be moved to individual bins. Mom's were returned to the cycle to the bottom bin. The result is that by the time females hit the top bin they were pregnant and left. Females that left were replaced by females from teh bin below...I think you can see the cycle.

A)Females that hit the top bin and failed to get pregnant within 6 months initial, 2 months during cycle, became feeders. New females were added to the bottom bin.

B)Males became feeders after working the top bin for 6 months initial, 2 months during cycle, they were replaced from the male below. Males were added to the system when the bottom male moved up.

I breed replacement females myself but bring males in from outside sources.
