What do I do with 500 crickets?

Starling Sep 15, 2003 01:30 PM

So I bought 500 crix yesterday at the IRBA show in San Mateo and am afraid to open the box, how much space do they need I have a sterilirte sweater box available will that work? Put some calcium and oatmeal and carrots in there?

Go to walmart/target/kmart and get yourself a 58qt sterilite tub, and some coarse sandpaper.

When you get home use the sandpaper to make the bottom half of the sides of the tub rough, this will give you more surface area for the crickets and they still will not be able to jump out.

I use chicken mash for my primary gutload... common moisture sources are oranges, carrots, potatoes, etc...

If my instructions were confusing the picture should clear it up.

Hope this helped.

I just realized I have a 20 gallon with a screen top I have just been washing out I am not using for geckos yet, will do that for now. But may use your idea in the future, as I do plan to put geckos in that 20 gallon.

That is how I keep my crix too. Only I feed mine gerber dry cereal and whatever I happen to feed the torts that day.

anything smaller and it might be difficult to get all the crix out without losing a bunch. personally i get between 3,000-5,000 crix at one time and i just seperate them into different tanks-about 1,000-1,500 per 10 gallon tank.

also opening the box of crix in a garbage bag (then pour the bag of crix into the tank) really helps for less experienced cricket box openers =P

i must have opened hundreds of boxes of crickets when i worked at the store- that really helped me gain some "expert cricket box opening skills" haha...see you at the petuluma show, take care

How did you hear I would be there? I talked to Marcia of Golden Gate Geckos (a real pleasure) for quite a while at the IRBA show yesterday (mentioned you would be there, she is looking forward to meeting you), and mentioned it to her, and have been emailing about it with Steven of Royal Gold Reptiles, I have decided to go and get a table to show & sell my geckos, will be my first show!

I agree with the 10 gallon tank.

I don't use the plastic bag trick. I lose too many that way. I have just gotten good at opening the box and getting them into the aquarium without losing any. If the box is too big I use a larger aquarium anyway and so it still fits.

I put the crix in a 20 gallon tank, and put the egg crates they were shipped with in there too. For food they have Cricket Bites. oatmeal, calcium powder, carrots, a string bean broken up, a little green cabbbage and some sliced raw beets. Do I need to put some kind of protein in there and what is good to use for that?

about ten escaped- oh no- but I caught most of them. A young gecko just escaped, so at least it will have something to eat.

Fish flake food is loaded with protein, almost 50%. Just make sure it doesn't come in contact with any of the veggies or it will stink up quite a bit.
