Unexplained Deaths?

Mistifire Jul 19, 2009 05:42 PM

I'm not sure what is going on, but i'm starting to worry.

I had a garter snake that was older die last month, it regurgitated its food and died.

I bought a baby savanna monitor for my birthday and he was not ever really active, he died and I got a replacement thinking it was just a weak baby, the second one stopped eating on his own and died.

Last week my male hatchling Brazilian rainbow boa didn't eat, he skips a feeding every now and then, and I found him dead 4 days ago, the female hatchling has been acting normal and she ate, but I found her dead today.

I have a yearling ball, a 3 year old ball python, a 6ft iguana and 2 box turtles that I don't want to loose, I don't know what is going wrong, they all had clean water, heat, proper food and everything.

The BRB were on fresh pre-killed pink rats and the garter was on live pink mice, the Sav. was eating crickets.

I would appreciate any ideas before I loose any more.
Thanks, Michelle

The best thing I can say is that you need to get a necropsy done with tissue samples. This will cost money however... I had one done and the sample cost was $150.00. However if there something viral or bacterial going through, this will be your best bet...

I strongly agree. You could be looking at something like cryptosporidia, various virus', something in the water... anything really. I hope it's just bad luck and nothing contagious... I"m sorry for all of your losses.

I would keep all of your animals seperated, under individual strict quarantine until you solve this problem. Also recheck your husbandry... could something have made a bunch of cages get to hot or cold? Somthing else?

Keep us updated and good luck,

Ian

Michelle,
You mentioned that the one snake regurgitated; did any of the other snakes show the same symptom, or did any of them have diarrhea?
