Herp trip (a little late)

phiber_optikx Jul 19, 2009 08:34 PM

Ok, so this is about a year late. But better late than never. Last Oct. I was sent down to Tampa Florida for two weeks on a business trip. The whole month before I went I was SOOOOO excited about getting to fly down for a while and look for snakes on my time off. As it turned out, they wanted me to work while I was there.... How was I supposed to know I had to work on a business trip? I did however manage to get a few days off in that time. I divided it between the beach, and looking for snakes. 1 day each. The beach turned out to be the more rewarding trip unfortunately. I was in Brandon which is a few miles east of Tampa. I went looking for snakes at Withlacoochee state park. The smaller one near Brooksville off of I-75. It was a neat little park with absolutely NO cornsnakes in it. Not that I could find anyway. I relaise that the middle of the day is not the best time to look but it is all I had. I did get to romp around in some really neat areas that you won't find in Missouri though.
The Beach

This is the general type of terrain I was looking in.

I was expecting Yoda to pop out of this one at any second....

Little Pine glade where I found some black racers.

I really like spanish moss...

Not even an alligator.

So that is basically it. I got an all expense paid trip to cornsnake country, and found absolutely no cornsnakes. I did almost step on a few stingrays though...

Also, I wanted to ask the Floridians.... What makes the trees and ground like that? Is it flooding? Pigs rutting around..? George Bush?

You gotta be kidding me.... But anywho, that waterhole looks like a good spot for some Indigos as well (And they ARE diurnal, primarily mid morning hours that is) I live in (another) corn country (NC), and do find lots of them all the time (they are quite common here), but never during the day.
I have found a few corns on the roads in the early morning hours (8:00 - 9:00 am) in southern Ga. and N. Florida usually in May.
Nice pics though - thanks for sharing!
