Surprises

dlwise Jul 21, 2009 12:29 PM

I thought I would share a fun surprise I found this morning!
I set four clutches this year. Three were out the first week of July with no surprises at all. The last clutch finished today. Dad was a snow and mom was a normal I picked up at petco a few years ago. 11 out of 11 hatched with the following results:
2 normals
6 anery
2 ghosts (I think)
1 hypo (I think)

Can anyone confirm the ghost and hypo diagnosis The pictures I have seen of ghosts seem darker than this but I'm not sure. This was definitely a fun clutch!!

Looks like the normal was het. snow and you got normals, anerys, amels, and snows. Snows are quite pink and colorful when hatched due to their thin skin allowing the red of the blood vessels to show through. Its easier to see all corns colors better after their first shed.

I had ruled out amel and snow due to dark eyes, but I'm not sure that showed up in the first pics. I took some more close up pictures....

I am torn between ghost and hypo or ultramel anery and ultramel..Would like to see pictures of the eyes of the "hypo" looking one..

Here is a closer shot of the head of the possible hypo hatchling. I also included pictures of the parents. I crossed the snow male with an amel last year and got an entire clutch of amels. This is the first clutch for the female. What would be an indicator of ultra vs hypo?

I can't seem to rearrange the pictures so the hatchling is in the middle...

I need to wrack my brain a bit.. Something does not seem to make sense to me with this.. What I think I see is an Ultramel.. Red pupil and rather dark iris, and the colouration throughout the body.. Of course what does not seem to make sense to me is the count of phenotypes, and well the Momma does not have the typical ultramel appearence in the picture. It might be lately I have had a bit of ultra on the brain too.. *lol*

However, this might point towards Hypo, but like I said, this does not appear to be what I think I am seeing with that hatchling.. You certainly have had a fun clutch here..

I can't promise you that I can figure this out with what you have posted.. It is probably an obvious puzzle to someone else. Hopefully others with genetics knowledge can chime in here too!

This is definately a fun problem to have...no complaints here. I am not very familiar with ultra but as I understand it, ultra is another form of the amel gene. If so can a snow which is amelanistic pass on ultra?

Thanks for all your input!

I know what you are saying when it is hard to determine what "some" of the hatchlings are, there is such a fariance in some of the "morphs".....With ghosts there is such a wide range, from your Siver Queens to your Ghosts that look all but Anery...Then you have issues with hidden hets that sometimes pop up.......It ain't as easy as it was yrs back, lol.....I have had to keep back alot of hatchlings just becouse I wasn't sure what they were, and I didn't want to sell them as something and have them end up to be something else, nor did I want to get rid of something that may be something I may want later......Ya get in a bind some times....lol.......I would wait till they shed a few times and see what you have, it gets easier sometimes as they grow, SOMETIMES....lol
