snake rescues in New England?

Yankee_Em Jul 21, 2009 07:06 PM

Hello, all. I'm new to this forum so if this isn't the appropriate place to post this, I do apologize. I'm new to reptiles, but have done a lot of research and would like to get a corn snake (not right away, but likely within a few months or so). I was wondering if anyone was aware of any decent snake/reptile rescues in the New England area? I'd prefer to adopt a snake that needs a home, if at all possible, but I haven't had much luck finding reptile rescues in my area, and many rescues won't ship their reptiles (understandably). I mean no offense to all the dedicated breeders out there, I've just always liked to adopt animals when possible. If anyone can help me out I'd really appreciate it. Thanks very much!

Most breeders will likely commend you, not take offense. Taking in rescued animals is great service to both the industry and the animal.

Check with your local SPCA and also pet stores. Some agencies will post ads at local pet stores. Check the bulletin boards there. You may not find an ad for a snake, but you might find one for the rescue agency and you can then call them.

Also, you could check petfinder.com

hope this helps

Thanks very much. I won't be able to get a snake for a few months yet, so I do have some time. I think part of the trouble is that corn snakes don't get very large and aren't as difficult to care for as other snakes, so they don't get dumped at shelters as much. This is great for the corn snakes, but I have neither the space nor the ability nor the inclination to care for a more commonly dumped species, like a Burmese. Guess I'll just keep looking

You might also try the pet section on craigslist. You probably won't find an agency advertising there but you are very likely to find a cornsnake ad directly from the pet owner. My cornsnake was acquired this way at a killer price. Some people there will sell at pet store prices but most just want to find a good home for their pets and may ask for a modest rehoming fee to ensure that the person taking their animal isn't doing it for the sake of getting a free pet.

Funny you should mention that, I was cruising the Craigslist and found an ad for an albino corn snake (looked like a blizzard or snow corn to me) that a girl had "bought about 3 weeks ago when my boyfriend bought his bearded dragon I thought I would like it but I'm scared to pick it up and don't show it much attention." The snake was in a tank with a heat lamp, one half log, and pine chips with no water bowl that I could see...I emailed the girl asking if she still had the snake and telling her she needed to provide it with water right away.

The location is quite a drive for me, but I don't know if I could have it on my conscience that I let the poor little guy stay in this person's ownership, so I might have a snake sooner than expected :P

I don't see how people can buy animals that they are afraid of and expect it to go well..

If you end up with that corn feel free to try and post some pics for us to see.

Trust me, I know. Whether I end up with the snake or not, you can see pictures, though. Just take a look at this Craigslist link to the ad: http://capecod.craigslist.org/for/1247749457.html

Doesn't sound like they're feeding the snake enough either, but I'm less concerned about that than I am about the lack of water. It's been a while since the ad was posted, so I'm not that hopeful that the snake is still available (or alive >.
