Sal's new digs

DaviDC. May 25, 2003 01:06 AM

A few weeks ago I moved my 3 year old redfoot into a new pen after discovering one of my cats was using it as a litter box. This tub had been his home when he 1st came to live here but I moved him up to a larger one about a year ago. I need to add that due to my job, I have access to a variety of plastic tubs of many shapes & sizes & am constantly on the look out for that perfect tub to make the ideal tortoise pen.

I set this one up again with fresh cypress mulch & arranged the plants under the lights & put a hide box in the corner. The next day I discovered that Sal had made his own lair by burrowing down between two 4" pots of kalanchoes. I was glad he found his own place rather than use the box I 'd provided, so I improved what he had started by spreading the plants apart to give him more room.

He spends about 90% of his time in this spot, always entering from behind the plants so that he can see out into the room. I'd like to think he's very happy with this environment even though it's smaller than the one he had.

The large photo is without a flash & the insert is a flash shot showing him in his lair.

These are great pictures and Sal definitely looks very happy!
Just one concern,- Ivy is on the poisonous plant lists of various
sources (including Andy Highfield's Tortoise feeding manual).
I am not sure about Kalanchoe... Maybe you should do a little
research on which plants are safe and exchange one or the other,
just in case Sal decides to snack!
My 3 years old Redfoot Kathrin will eat anything live and green
and thus the Golden Pothos, which I read was safe, had to go after
I found out, that it actually is not. Another option is to put
plants, that are not for consumption, high enough, so that they
cannot be reached by the tort!
