Stubborn Eastern Eats a fish?

aquaboyaquatics Jul 24, 2009 01:28 PM

Has anyone herd of or tried to feed an Eastern fish? I had one that would not feed since I got it. I tried F/T pinkies, Brained F/T pinkies, worms and scented pinkies. No luck. I was doing a water change on my fish tank when i noticed a dying Tetra. I figured what the hell, why let it go to waist? It was eaten almost instantly! I dont know if it was because it was alive and mooving or what but i did not think these guys were big on sushi? I will try a live pink tomorrow and test the "live and moving" theory.

Yes LTT Eastern Milks. I have'nt read in any of the literature about them eating fish. You say you have had this same experience? Should i get pinkies or feeder goldfish to keep this one eating?

I'm going back a long time since these species were kept.
Used bait fish sold in nearby charter boat areas. Only did so because mice were not as available then.

Thanks for the info. I just put a live pink in there so im going to test the live food and see if that does it. If it does not work i have some shiners in my bait tank and will try and scent a frozen thawed pink with them.

Hey...Is it possible the Eastern thought the Tetra was a Skink? I've often wondered if Eastern Milk hatchlings feed on hatchling Prairie Skinks in the wild. (Perfect size, shape and timing) Anyone have experience or info on this? TJ.

I have sometimes scented pinks with tuna fish, something about that fishy smell. Paul Weaver taught me that trick and it usually can work on a stubborn baby milk of any ssp.

That is a great idea. I will try it now. The live pink has been in with it for a few hours and no dice. I am going for the tuna idea.

The snake is from the finger lake region in NY so could it be a locality thing that fish are a part of this bloodlines natural food?

Scented Tuna-Pink did not work. Will try a plain old shiner tomorrow.
