FLY RIVER TURTLE / PIG NOSED....HELP

Sarahlzbthz Jul 24, 2009 03:37 PM

It's very weird, my sister's neighbor found a Pig Nosed Turtle in his backyard, and gave it to her...... Where did it come from, and why was it on land, I don't know, I suppose someone dumped it there... ....I looked it up, and found out it's a rare threatened species.......Well....My sister cannot take care of it, she has no tank or tub to put it in..... She lives in Riverside, California....So I called the LA Zoo, and they said they might call back if they can take it.....But if they don't, Who can take it???? It needs an experienced turtle owner with the right facilities to care for it.....I know they grow pretty large..... Right now it's in a pan of water, and we're afraid it's going to die.....DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHO WE CAN CONTACT?????? Thanks

Not knowing your level of experience I have to ask, are you sure it is not a Soft-shelled Turtle? Native to the U.S. and commonly kept as pets. Not rare or expensive.
A photo would be helpful. What size is it? Can you describe it?
You should probably repost this on one of the appropriate Chelonian forums, if you haven't already.

Well, I haven't seen the turtle in person, I live in a different state than her....But I just got a couple cell phone pics of it, and yes, I think it is a softshell turtle.... My sister took it to a reptile rescue yesterday...But the lady said it's a Mississippi mud turtle....I looked it up, and that doesn't look like it at all... Here's the pics.... I think I'm going to have to email that rescue lady...

Yes. It is a Spiny Soft-shelled Turtle. Looks like the ones that come from Texas (3 very similar subspecies). Common in the trade and easy to take care of. They retail for around $20, I'd say. Maybe a little more in some parts of the country. Look it up on the Internet. Spiny Softshell and Texas Spiny Softshell to find more info on captive care. Aquatic, but needs a place to dry out and bask, etc.

Thank you for the info. The Texas spiny does seem to be it.
