No Shows in Minnesota?

akhanna Jul 25, 2009 10:06 AM

Just moved to this area (Minneapolis) a month ago and have been checking out the Events list and can't seem to find anything w/i 3-4 hours. Closest I can find is SEWERFEST and that is 5 hours away....are there any shows around here?

Sorry, Akhanna, right now if you really want to go to a show you'll have to do some driving out to Wisconsin. As far as I know there isn't anything in Minnesota.

There are occasional shows but they aren't well advertised. Join the state Herp society and you'll have better notice when something is going on.

With that in mind, a buddy and I have been tossing the idea of producing a show in Minnesota for a while now. We are still in the initial planning stages and have had a little difficulty finding an appropriate site. Most places seem to want us to book at least 18 months out or they want an almost extreme amount of money up front to reserve the space.

We are slowly working on it, right now we both have quite a few other projects going on so most of our talks about a Minnesota show have been put on the back burner.

If and when we pull it all together, TRUST ME, everyone will know ahead of time with plenty of time to prepare to make the trip and save their pennies for all of the animals they want.

Every 6 years or so the Midwest Herp Symposium comes to town and there is a reptile show, then. Otherwise, the Mn. Herp Society hosts a meet and greet info place at the Renaissance Festival and some display animals at the MN State Fair. No shows.
Brandon, if you need someone to help with putting a show together, I can volunteer some hours. Just let me know. Many of us would love an annual reptile show. The last time people were talking about it, they kept saying Labor Day weekend. That won't work as the state fair is then and the competition for gate tickets would be too great.

Forgot to add---SW Reptiles hosts a show in Des Moines, Iowa. That's a quick 4 hours straight down Hwy. 35. Its in Sept.

There's also the WIRE show in Monona(Madison) WI twice a year. That's not too far of a drive from MN.

I put 5 years into doing a show here and it never got of the ground. The up front money is crazy.
I put the last MHS show together and to get vendors to come up for it was very hard, some wanted me to give them free tables and such.I did get some great vendors ,but only a hand full.
