JohnRI Jul 25, 2009 10:11 AM

Yet another Burm escaped yesterday from its owner. Portsmouth RI was put on high alert by the police department. Police telling people to stay inside and keep your pets inside for your safety.

Burms are going to ruin this Industry.

The Burms aren't the problem. It's the people that own them.

that is true. the public looks at it like this, "if no one had them then there would be no problem". like it or not the big snakes are causing us big problems. as you said the owners are the problem but that is just the point, the owners "own" the big snakes that they do not care for in a responsible manner. do we all have to endure the hardship put on us as reptile owners in order for some people to own snakes that are more than they can handle? like it or not but the public "right or wrong" will not go for any more big snake problems. the problem is, they think ALL Pythons are big snakes. NOW THAT IS A PROBLEM.

You're half right... it's the people that own them AND the people that sell them and breed them that will ruin it for the rest of us.

Thats about like saying pitbulls ruined the dog industry. Its the owners that do not practice responsible husbandry and random acts of insight to those NOT educated about snakes and reptiles that are damaging this industry and are giving that particular snake (and most big snakes) a bad reputation, I am not a big snake fan and IMO do not think any one that wants to keep a 15' plus snake should do so with very young kids around UNLESS they are housed separately and SECURELY. I do understand burms and the reason people want to keep them and they are very neat snakes! Most every one knows that more deaths come from almost everything and anything than pet snakes each year. Just take proper care of what you keep and double check your locks and screen clips and we will get less scrutiny from the people that grew up with the miss information of all snakes are slimy, Vicious, pythons are going to eat them and on and on. If we as responsible business owners, hobbyist and even the random keeper dont pioneer knowledge and responsibility to these people then the annual DOUBLING of new owners in to the snake hobby will surely dwindle, no longer flourish and that will be what KILLS the snake trade. Just my Humble opinion but maybe one or two of you will take to this and educate that paranoid Person next to you we will help end the terror in the VOTERS minds one by one. . . . . . .

As someone who used to keep large exotic felines (lions, tigers and such) and who bred various spieces of snakes. I can tell you that the largest animal is always the one they (gov,HSUS,PETA) go after and lump in the others. I can also say that we (BREEDERS, SUPPLIERS) have to do a better job of educated buyers or owners aas well as NOT selling to morons that endanger our hobby; life by their non-caring attitudes. Fight the good fight, Bob

To the people that say the snakes are the problem:

I can't believe what I've been reading... You would not have as popular of a hobby as you do, without burms and the several other ALL TIME most popular herp pets. If legislation is allowed to pass, and they take away the right to import and export Burmese pythons, these people will word such an article so that it can be ammended whenever they wish. If it does pass at any level, it will no longer need to be presented before the committee. They will just get a majority vote and add it. The members of the genus Python will be the first to go, because they are in the same family. They WILL NOT STOP with burmese. They will then take retics, then rocks, and probably anything over 6ft long. These people are relentless and some of you don't get that. They are not going to just take away our right to import and export P. m. bivittatus......that is just where it will start. They don't care what it does to shops and businesses and breeders.

I know times are hard but, there should really be some standard we hold ourselves to when it comes to selling a large constrictor. Should it be age? a permit? a test?

It is 100% irresponsible owners who are to blame for all the recent events in the media spotlight. Weather they should have never purchased an animal that gets so large.

Snakes are some of the most perfectly designed killing machines and escape artists this world has ever known. Why do we fault the snake for doing what it is designed to do so well? We are more advanced, we have thumbs, we as a community should be able to keep our pets contained.

"Stay inside"? Is it a Burm or Godzilla??????

thunderpaws Jul 25, 2009 03:43 PM

Hi,

When I was 12 my mom bought me a burmese python. I had been catching local snakes for about 2 years in southern CA. I had tons of alligator lizzards, king snakes, gopher snakes Striped racers. I even caught a couple rattle snakes but could never get them to eat so I let them go. Now I was 12 at the time. The year was 1981 when I bought this snake. I bought it for like 20.00 dollars. The snake was a baby and I named it Stan. I grew the snake to over 13 feet within a couple years time and I kept him in a jewelry showcase. That snake meant the world to me and eveyone that knew me or anyone that knew I had Stan was ever concerned for their safety. Most people wanted to pet it or just see it or especially see it eat. Well one day I was feeding it and the snake was all the way at the other end of the cage it bit my forearm during a feeding. It was totally my fault and I will never forget that the bite looked like a small shark had bitten me. It was very scary to say the least and I ended up giving the snake up to a breeder in Semi Valley after the incident. It is just funny how at the age of 14 I had the savy to know what I could handle and not handle. How can these total idiots end up keeping snakes that are in my opinion very easy to cage and care for. All the years these snakes have been around and all the sudden they are casted as killers and evil villans. All the news on them lately has been sparking my interest in buying one again as a pet. That snake is always in my thoughts and was one of the coolest pets I ever owned. I would be very saddened to think the government could take our rights away of owning such a beautiful constritor.

Thanks for letting me share my story,
Bill R.

it will be all for not if we do not stop the onslaught against us. the public is not on our side and we had better be smarter than they are and we had better "WAKE UP". IF THEY BAN THEM IT WILL NOT MATTER WHAT YOU WOULD LIKE. that freedom will be GONE,,,,,,,,,,,

Alerted a town...over an EIGHT FOOT burm?
Really?

Love the woman's response there...

"I don't like snakes, and if it gets out again, the kids have to stay in the house..."

but it's ok for if someone's dog is out...
people let their DOGS out in the yard all the damn time.

I hate people.

I see what your saying. But, look at it this way. I used to have 600 lb siberian tiger that walked on a leash and did photos and magazine and stuff. Know would it be the responsible thing to do and walk him down the street of the local residential area?
Remember as well most people are poor judges of size, and to many an 8' snake looks more like a monster then we could ever imagine. There is always going to be those "WOW FACTOR" owners. There were tons in the exotic animal trade and I saw them alot with the reptiles. The goofballs that wanted the retic or burm or the gator to just show off and never once intended to learn and damn thing about the animal now under their care.
