I provide a tupperware that I cut a snake sized hole in the top and the lower side along with a few smaller ventilation holes around it. I fill this about halfway with damp sphagnum moss. My snake had no idea what it was at first, but I locked him up in it and let him figure his way out and now he uses it regularly. Make sure that the container, when filled halfway with the moss, is a nice tight hide for the snake so he appreciates it as a hide as will as a humid hide. My snake and a friend's cornsnake that I introduced to the humid hide usually end up shedding all in one piece on the way out of the hide because the entrance is usually a bit rough (you should cut it instead of melt it, but make sure to file off any sharp edges, but the roughness I think really helps.
I hope the tupperware will encourage him to shed himself, merely by exiting the hide, as well as making it easier to shed, though it seems he doesn't have a problem with the shed being patchy. Oh, and place it on the warmer/middle of the tank, they seem to use it there more often.
