Bad news

Eric East Jul 25, 2009 12:38 PM

Of the 3 eggs I only got 1 hatchling and it is slightly kinked near the vent. The kink is not bad, but I wouldn't feel right selling it so, I'm going to give it to the guy who helped me aspirate the 5 eggs that were stuck. Without his help I may have lost the female!
It pipped on Thurs. the 16th and was out crawling around the next day.

Seeing no other pips, I carefully put a small slit in the other 2 eggs on Monday the 20th. Well, today, Sat. the 25th I opend the 2 eggs and found 2 dead easterns. Both were badly kinked and one had not completely developed.

I'm pretty bummed about the whole thing, but hopefully in 2 years when I breed her again i'll have better success.

Sorry to hear of your ordeal.

Any thoughts on causes?
Are the parents related, or temps?

It's been suggested that my temps of 78 degrees may have been too warm so I will try a lower incubation temp. next time.

Additionally, I had been feeding a primarily rodent diet. I am now varying that, feeding chicks and fish as well.
I have not tried it yet but I have some DOR copper heads in the freezer and will offer them in a few months. I believe snakes are very important to an indigo's diet and most of us never offer these to our animals.
I will be picking up a lot of "fresh" DOR's while road cruising from now on.

As far as the parents being related, the answer is a definite NO.

I just thought I would mention that my male is a red faced animal and my female is all black. Of the 3 babies (1 live and 2 dead) all were black phase animals.

Eric, Good attitude! We must rededicate ourselves anew!
I have cut out most rodents myself except here and there.

Cut out most of the rats? Did I miss something? S.

Sorry for your loss Eric, were the eggs incubated at a constant 78 or were temps allowed to vary? I would have thought 78 would have been alright.

Temps varied slightly by a degree or 2
