Just wanted to share a pic of our newest addition

James and I got this guy from Greg Hubbard yesterday before we left Columbia and we want to thank Greg for the special guy. He is a yearling male albino Eastern Diamondback and is over 4ft and is spectacular! Got a few girls lined up for him for the fall already!

Cheers!

Nice snake but, a four foot, sexually mature yearling?

oreganus Sep 16, 2003 10:36 AM

Can't you just leave it at "nice snake" or do you have to question everyone besides yourself all the time? That looks to be a decent size eastern male that could be capable of breeding in the next season. My friend has a timber from last years babies that is over 4ft.
Kevin
PS-for everyone else reading this,"total Jackass" likes to start stuff on other forums as of late also.

Taking a little time from the snake butcherin' are we Kev? Listen doucheb@g, when you pay for my computer, pay for my electricity bill, and pay for my internet service (all of which would reqiure you to get a job), then you can tell me what to type on this forum. You don't like the way I asked the question? Too bad, it wasn't directed to you. If they feel I was being an a$$ (which I don't feel I was trying to be, but you're a worthless piece of garbage and I don't need to explain myself to you), then I'm sure they will let me know it.

Getting back to the snake.....A four foot yearling makes me wonder who's been pumping the snake...Not a fan here of forced growth. Can lead to serious health problems... I ran into a guy that got his Burmese up to 14' the first year. Is this healthy???

I wouldn't think that pumping a snake up would make it sexually mature at a year though, regardless of size.

oreganus Sep 16, 2003 11:32 AM

I would say that it might be possible in a little over a year for a male, but I would definately say that a female would take alot longer. Also, if someone was unfortunate enough to be able to do so to a female, I doubt if she would make it to the delivery or live shortly there after. I know some snakes will breed at a year old, but I don't think easterns would make it.

It can't be healthy. You did mention timbers earlier, I know they have a very late sexual maturity, especially individuals from more Northern areas. I thought diamondbacks reached maturity at 2 or 3.

oreganus Sep 16, 2003 12:07 PM

not sure, I will read up on it to be exact and chat later.

i mostly breed ball pythons and sand boas.. but a "typical" first time breeding male ball python is around 1000 grams where typical females are 1200-1800 grams for their first breeding (usually at 2 years of age)..

that being said i produced a clutch of ball pythons last year from a male who was a whopping 226 grams.. he was 6 months old..

he was producing sperm plugs.. so i thought "why not".. he courted and courted and courted.. and finally managed to get the female gravid after 2 months.. she produced 6 eggs.. 5 of which were fertile and went on to produce healthy babies..

i have seen people breed yearling male corns.. yearling male sand boas.. yearling male almost everything.. just because males "sexual" maturity isnt dependant on its weight (like a female would be)

i dont see how attempting to breed a yearling MALE anything is harmful to its health.. the worst that can happen is NOTHING at all

anyways.. just my 2 cents

What's that they said about teenage boys............(lol)Frank

earthmover Sep 16, 2003 05:59 PM

i have found with eastern diamondbacks that between 3-4 years old is when a male can successfully breed. being a male you dont have to worry about carrying the babies or weight just whether or not the sperm is viable. i prefer to grow animals up slowly and breed at about 5 years of age. i have some gaboons that are 16 years old and produced this year after 4 years off and the female had 39 babies. im of the opinion that if you grow animals slowly your animals will produce and live for a much longer time

just my .02 cents

oreganus Sep 16, 2003 11:27 AM

I don't condone it, I was simply stating that it's possible. I would definately agree with you that it is really unhealthy for the animals to powerfeed and it dramatically shortens their lifespan.
Kevin

Call me old fashioned...But I never try to breed anything under two years. Methinks folks get into too much of a hurry sometimes....Frank

tj Sep 16, 2003 11:50 AM

Agreed as well. Why not just buy snakes that are already of breedable age?

najaanja Sep 16, 2003 12:54 PM

Look if he breeds for me great, if not then there is next year. Im the one that is spending the money on this animal, not you. If it were a female there is no way I would do it, but it is a very healthy male with good size on him. If he shows no interest in the girls then so be it. I know plenty out there breeding their yearling adamanteus MALES with no problems as long as they are good weight and all. In the end the decision is mine, I see no way putting him in with some girls is gonna hurt him at all as long as he continues to feed well for me.

Oh and NO he has not been powerfed.

Regards,
Anja

Hey, No need to get defensive. It IS your animal and your choice. But when you go on a forum you invite differing opinions. Your snake is way bigger than norm for it's age so don't be surprised at the questions... In all people are offering you help so so be cool...Frank

PeeDee Reptiles Sep 16, 2003 10:04 PM

You tell em girl!!! I have one of the smaller ones and I hope he goes next year!

Thanks, JJ

No one told her what to do. She presented her snake on the forum which was an invitation for comment. That she did not choose to respect the observations and advice given is her right. However, the information was given to help her-not control her and should be respected in the spirit it was given. Several people took time to try and help...maybe next time we should all ignore her posts.

hmmm, your saying that he is 4' long and is a yearling and that he has not been powerfed? hahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahaha!

Blackwater Sep 16, 2003 01:16 PM

I had a 30 month old female and an 18 month old C.atrox that produced babies the following spring. Which would have put the male at almost 2 years and the female right at three years when the babies from the pairing were born. Would I recommend it, No... I think it is hard on the animals to push them along that hard, but I experimented and had those results. I never saw them breed, but the end result was 3 live and 8 slugs. I shipped the female gravid, unknown to me, and I think that's why she had so many slugs....
