Moving...

smelltheglove Jul 25, 2009 09:35 PM

Hey,

I have a quick but somewhat urgent question. I am moving tomorrow afternoon, and need to know the best possible way to transport my kingsnake. She's 17 in. long and lives in a 30 gallon tank.

She's going to have to travel 160 miles, and I really am not sure whether or not its a good idea to leave her in the secured tank.

Thanks in advance!

Put her next to you near the aircondition. Cars or truck have a way of killing the snakes when they get overheated. Just put the snake in a pillow sack or plastic tub. Just make sure if you use a tun that the lid will stay closed.

The thing you need to pay attention to is making sure your snake does not overheat . Just the sun shining on the bag or tub from a window will get it to hot.

..and don't ever leave you car off and the snake in the car. It only takes a few minutes and they will roll on you (overheat!)

Ok thanks. One more question though: should I cover the plastic tub with a blanket? I'm just thinking doing so might make the ordeal a little less stressful.

NO. Use newspapers or shavings to keep the snake snug inside.

remember snakes are not claustrophobic and like to be jammed in. They feel more secure this way and that equal = less stress while travling.

Putting a blanket over the tub won't do much to eleviate stress plus you can't observe the snake while dribing...

..more accidents happen when you can't see the snake. This way you can tell if there is something wrong, like overheating or regurging, deficating ..ect

A lot can happen during a drive!
I recently moved 200 miles. Snakes made it ok, but my 6 foot Florida didn't like it one bit and made a break for it twice! Picture driving through Knoxville, TN, during rush hour in a thunderstorm and my wife wrestling the snake back into his tub!

All ended well, at least for the snake

Ya , That junk happens.

All sorts of trhing can go wrong with traveling. Starting with spilling coffee all over your pants at the start of a trip. No matter how hard you plan everything that can go wrong, does.
