"Got Contrast"

RandyWhittington Jul 26, 2009 12:37 AM

What I think I love most about d. jani, d. deppei and many other pits is the extreme contrast they have. People who aren't very familiar with snakes in general always say "Is that two snakes" when I show them a picture of pit.

Wow...those are both beautiful but that first one is just jaw-dropping. Is that some form of hypo? Is it a jani or deppei?

While I'm at it, would you be able to explain to discern between the two?

I ask because some time ago I got one of each as hatchlings. At some point during a rack cleaning session I lost track of which was which. While I have a hunch as to which is which I really don't know for sure (he says embarrasingly).

Here's a few shots of the one I believe is a P.d.deppei:

Thanks.

Thanks Scott. The top one is a hypo d. deppei.
D. deppei tend to have more uniform colored blotches from head to tail than jani do.
The one you posted looks like a d. deppei. Notice how it's blotches are the same color at it's tail as they are at it's head.

Incredible! My fav is the second one...is that jani or deppei? I would guess jani??? I'm really hoping my little '07 gets that yellow...sort of looks like she might.

This group of pits most definitely has one of the more complex color schemes of the colubrids. It is interesting that jani are found in the same locale of L. m. thayeri also known as the variable kingsnake.........something in the water or soil, maybe???? You can get a lot of different looking animals right out of the same clutch with both of these species.

Wow that Jani is vibrant, beautiful yellow. I dig the reduced pattern on that deppei.
