What are you using for hides?

Joeycoco98 Jul 26, 2009 05:15 PM

So my pits are getting to big for normal hides so I am wondering what everyone is using for their Pits? I was using the biggest Repti Cave those have become to small for my male Pines and Bulls. Suggestions?

Thanks,
Miller

I'm thinking you are looking for something rather aesthetically pleasing, so you may not be impressed with my selections. I am real big on things that are free or cheap. Copy paper box tops work great. I'm also partial to those medium sized USPS flat rate boxes. Sometimes, you can get lucky hitting the thrift shops for various plastic and wooden articles. If you are handy and have access to flat stones and a tile saw, you could probably fabricate some pretty attractive hides with a bit of epoxy. Just a few things to think about.

For my larger pits I use cereal boxes and soda boxes (the longs ones). My Bulls and Lineaticollis love the soda boxes. They are not good looking for decorations but if they soil on them, you can just through them away.

next time you are at pep boys, check out their hexagonal oil drain pan. cut a hole in it and invert it it should do well for a bull.

cardboard boxes work fine too and don't have to be washed. just replace if soiled.

Thank you'll for the replies. My collection and spacing requirements have gotten to big for me to be concerned about looks as my first priority. I think the oil pan is a intriguing idea, i am going by Pep boys tomorrow. I don't grocery shop enough to have spare cereal boxes plus my snakes like to poop on anything that I would like to last in their cages for longer than a day!

Thanks again everyone,
Miller

One of my pituophis sphagnum moss tubs. A cardboard flat sits over that. It is filled with orchid moss (very soft and nice) lightly moistened. When they are in blue they especially love these hides. When they don't feel like being in the Glad container they will rest on top of it under the cardboard. The Glad containers do have to be checked frequently, as they tend to poop in them. The bigger the snake, the bigger the Glad containers and cardboard. They have these over their UTH's, so when it is cold they will either go inside the Glad container to the bottom or just coil up between the container and the tub floor. So they have a choice of how moist or dry they want to be as well as how warm or cool.

The idea about the oil drain pan led me to considering those plastic storage bins one uses in shelf systems to hold nails and nuts and other small hardware. They look like this:

Turned upside down, these bins would make good hides. I plan on getting a batch for my mice. Washable and durable, in assorted sizes.

Like Jason said cardboard water flats and soda flats work great. The plastic or clay water catch pots work good if your snakes can fit under them and if you can ge them to fit inside your cage.
