` I wonder how you got the idea that I would leave them unsupervised. I'm obsessive about it. I never leave them alone for a second, when outside. I'm on the Pacific Northwest Coast, if one got away, it would die of exposure overnight, even in the summer. Also, there are cats, and other critters around. My snakes are used to my cats and would not defend themselves against a hostile cat soon enough, I'm afraid. Except for the old Ball, he hates any cat and will strike at one if it gets too close. My cats have learned to stay away from him, but they will step right over the Anacondas when they're on the floor.
` As far as the neighbors are concerned, they seem to watch for me to have the snakes outside. When they spot them, I am overrun with kids, and their parents, or grandparents. They want to hold them, and have their picture taken with them. The little girl next door isn't big enough to hold the 12 foot female by herself. She has to be content with a male, or a Boa. She's looking forward to getting big enough to hold a 50 pound snake all by herself.
` Many of these folks were wary of the big snakes at first. After seeing me wearing them around the yard during the summer, their curiosity got the better of them. Now, they come to my door and ask to see the snakes, if they don't catch me outside for a week, or so.
` I never disregard the fact that these are powerful constrictors, just a few generations removed from wild animals. With the wrong input, they could be dangerous. That would undo all the good I have done in educating people. I am very careful with them. Also, I never bother anyone who has extreme fear of snakes. Most of them are beyond help.
` How could you be afraid of them?
