I just got a response to hr 669...this is a reply message from ny senator massa.

Dear Mr. Jeffery:

Thank you for contacting my office with regard to H.R. 669, the Nonnative Wildlife Invasion Prevention Act. I must, however, disagree with your position on this issue, as I believe that protecting our natural ecosystems against the threats of nonnative species is of the utmost importance.

Already, we have seen the detrimental effects of introduced species on our native species and the very real impacts to entire ecosystems. Currently, the U.S. spends billions of dollars a year on assessing and fighting the damages of invasive species across the nation and still, we are finding more and more new cases of harmful nonnative introductions. I believe that as the problem continues to grow, we would be irresponsible not to take serious actions to address this issue.

While there are many nonnative species currently kept as pets across the US, most common species carried by retailers will not be restricted as threats to our environment. Only those that are determined to pose a serious threat to the health of our native wildlife and ecosystems will be listed under this bill. There is no reason to believe regulations under this bill will shut down businesses and lock up pet owners.

I oppose HR669. This Bill is not based in science, but in the ideology of powerful special interest groups. There is absolutely no evidence to suggest that banning the import, sale and trade of any of these animals will have any positive effect on the economy, environment, or human or animal species health.
In fact, if passed it would destroy many families and businesses. It would have a decidedly negative impact on an already ailing economy by destroying a vital and growing industry at a time when our country is in need of jobs and growth. The USFWS has just made changes to the CITES export permit process which would allow quality captive bred animals to be more easily exported to international customers. Passing HR669 would negate all the work USFWS has done for over a year. This Bill is a disaster to American small business and families in a time of economic hardship.
