Jani size, growth rate

mylicon Jul 29, 2009 07:53 AM

Hello all

I have an 07 jani and he is currently about 3 feet long and about 1.5 " in girth (two fingers). Does that sound about right? What are their adult sizes (I have read in excess of 6 feet). Randy W, Steve G, and Al Stotton, how big are your adult breeders? Is this a species that typically needs to be brumated for proper reproductive success?

Thanks for entertaining my questions.

3ft is not a bad size for an 07. Two year olds can definatly be larger than that but it's better to not push them too fast in my opinion.
They can reach 7ft but that is a large older adult. I have some adults in the 6ft range.
I've always brumated mine with good breeding sucess but you will always have folks on both sides of the fence on that one.

I tend to concentrate on age as opposed to size for a guage for when to breed animals.
With males i find its okay to keep them a little on the smaller side when compared to females can be fine to use in breedings at two years old.
In the case of the females I've NEVER attempting breedings with snakes under three years. This way you have allowed time for fuller maturity/development.
Personally I always use a brumation period without exception.

hope this helps.

My largest adult male is right at 7 feet. My mature breeder females are right at 6.5 feet. In my opinion, a 3 foot, 2 year old is running somewhat to the smallish side. I'll hedge that in that I do not know how your snake was fed during the winter months. I had one male reach 44" in one year, but that snake was not brumated and was maintained on his feeding schedule troughout his first winter. Brumate your jani just like any other colubrid. The temps where I live(east central Florida coast) don't maintain a continual mid-50's in the winter time. That said, my jani cycle without issue and breed every year.

The deppei complex has a reputation for regurge issues when young. They will most certainly perish if you try to feed them like a northern pine or a bull snake. They have slower metabolisms and you must be cognizant of this fact. That said, many people are afraid to feed their youngsters anything larger than a pinky mouse for months on end. Then they will go with two pinkies instead of a single larger food item. Mine have always grown well as I start them out on peach fuzzies and gradually increase the size of a single food item. Once they are feeding without issues for about six months, these snakes are pretty much bullet proof as long as temps remain in the 70-82 degree range..........just my 2 cents!
