This has been quite debatable at times...as one needs to be concerned about parasites (askaris/worms etc.) and freezing the fish is probably a good idea. Some folks concerned about thiaminase (?), an apparently deleterious break down product in long term frozen fish etc. I think the best are healthy trout...from a clean source and frozen/thawed. No spines, perfect shape, accepted by my Drys. I have offered/fed out several ocean caught fish in moderation, including saurys, herring, sardine, anchovy. Other folks like catfish strips, and goldfish, which I raise a few months and use to stimulate hatchlings to feed. If you are just using fish for scenting rodents, probably almost any would work. Some report canned tuna and salmon juice work well, and I know goldfish and various minnnows do also. Answering your question, I like skinny trout from a clean water source, frozen/thawed after a couple weeks. Good luck, Vic H.

I feed mine FT trout and Pan fish I catch in clean water. I'll also feed small chunks of fish I buy to eat but in small quantities. I see no Ill effects and they have very nice scales, the poops aren't even that bad.
