Spot of color in a leucy? Genetics Q.

HogBilly Jul 29, 2009 03:53 PM

Hey guys! I have my leucy texas rat that's growing up, and today I noticed a vibrant but tiny spot of cheeto-orange on a scale. I rubbed at it really well so pretty sure it's not grime/poop/whatever, and I don't think it's scale rot.

Do leucistics sometimes show spots of color? Because my only other guess would be a tiny fleck of paradox is going on, but I doubt I'm so lucky.

I think that is fairly common at least in Texas Rats. I used to breed those guys in years past and a I would always have a handful that would develope a few orange scales on them. I always wondered what would happen if I tried to line breed those animals with the most amount of orange scales. I had a few animals that would develope two or three orange scale. But I then realized how many generations that woudld take to notice a real difference.

Do you have any photos? I'd love to see that.

I do not have a camera at this time to take any pic's. I have so many snakes that I have no pic's of. Hopefully soon I can afford to buy a camera. It is not high on my priority list with all the other bills life has to offer. He has a few solid orange scales. He does have orange tipping on almost every scale on his body giving him an overall orange pink tone to him, quite unusual as I have a solid white 8 year old female from the same bloodline, not 1 orange scale and no tipping. This male is a brute and is about 6 foot long and quite girthy, the female is large but looks like a dwarf compared to him.

Sounds likely, snake color genetics are extremely complex & not well understood.

I also have an 8 year old female from the same bloodline that is pure white with not one orange scale. The male was once pure white with a few orange scales, but as he ages he gets more orange, the orange is not solid scales. Its orange tipping like you see in JCP's
