3-Years from now...

zefdin Jul 30, 2009 07:59 AM

I just bought 2 female baby morphs that were fairly expensive for me (1 well north of 1k)and it got me thinking "Am I even gonna be able to breed these girls in the 2-4 years it will take to get them to size?" The state I live in is talking about being able to keep your snakes but not being able to sell or breed them..? Makes you wonder and makes me nervous...

Just a thought.

Yeah I know what you mean. We are all supposed to die in 2012 so why are we spending so much money on all these reptiles. I have females that wont be ready to breed until 2012 season. I hope we dont die so I can hatch out my first balls. Scary.

If there were a bunch of bills before the House and Senate and half the southern states up in arms over the 2012 thing I would take it serious too. I dont personally think its a joke and the thousands of people contriibuting to USARK (like myself) to prevent it dont either. Laugh if you want to..

Its not a laughing matter your right about that. Sounds like your buying your snakes for all the wrong reasons.. Very very very very very very very very very few breeders ever become rich from breeding snakes so if that's what your hoping for sell your snakes now before you put any more money or time in them.. Instead of worrying why don't you take action make the calls send the letters. Put up a fight if you want to keep your rights as a reptile owner..

I could care less about snake money, many times I have I given my hets aways as normals that I dont need, or cant keep. I want to be able to breed what I buy, thats why I am buying them. That is very much of the fun for me.

You dont get nervous when you buy a snake (esp. females that take 2-4yrs) that it may be illegal to own by the time she is breedable. That is all the fun for me. It is common sense when you purchase something for 2k that you cant fully enjoy for 3 or 4 years to wonder if it might be illegal by then. Look at the 50 posts above and below this..

No -I dont think its a laughing matter.

I never expected to et rich...but what I have always produced goes to helping me keep my collection...it has always paid for it with a small profit...nothing more...if they require a License...which they do in Florida to sell...as long as it is fairly cheap...its not a big deal...the nation should look at Floridas Laws for advice...we are 1 of the most heavily regulated and things are not that bad here.

It is nice to offset some costs by selling a snake or two. Heck sell 1000 snakes and make a boatload of cash, I am happy for you! I am not against fees perse and many times I think that maybe fees will keep the yokels away, like the 16 year olds that just want a cool & big snake and then throw it away when it becomes inconvienent. The problem with fees and laws and the enforcement of these laws is that government can never stop with just a small fee and they always will want to add and increase costs to pay for other things. I also, dont like the idea of having to let inspectors in to the privacy of my home when I have done nothing wrong. Laws such as these most often only hurt the law abiding person's wallet and his/her privacy. If you have people who are breaking the current laws that are in place already by throwing snakes into the everglades, does anyone really believes these people are going to follow the new laws that are passed? More laws and restricting law abiding folks freedom is not the answer here.

if you have not broken the law...then you have nothing to fear in the occasional inspection...that may or may not occur...get a driver license and you are subject to inspection...a License in a sense keeps you in check too make sure you are doing the right thing and not the wrong thing...it also pays for the enforcement of the law...you either believe in laws...or lawlessness...laws...are created by the goverment...so is it law...or lawlessness?

What are you talking about? A group of people got together at Jamestown, formed a compact and agreed to use laws to maintain harmony and peace. The idea was not to create laws to raise money so they could have more laws? As far as a little search of someones private home now and then, and acting like that should be no big deal... It is a very big deal. I own a snake, that should not subject me to randomn searches. My drivers license doesnt either. You have to break a law first, BEFORE they can search your car. Holy God...its over if people are lemmings.

The sad thing is that i am not joking. Out of all the so called doomsday prophecy's this one worries me the most. But hopefully nothing happens and hopefully none of the bills pass.

I have thought & worried about the whole Mayan calander and 2012 too, but not as it relates to my snake breeding...until now. One more thing to make me crazy! Hey, do you listen to Coast to Coast radio at night and watch the cable shows that talk about Nostradamus and doomsday stuff. I love them, but it freaks me out! I thought you were tweaking me with that cause it was so out from left field...

One more thing to worry about - thanks alot!

If anything,we are in for a hell of a meteor shower.(What else could it be?).

Which i find ironic,as not one meteorologist today could tell us if this is true or not..Let alone if is going to rain. :P

I can already envision the stock market rush on the the first company that makes titanium and kevlar umbrellas..lol

I have said it before and I still believe the federal laws are not our biggest problem. Don't get me wrong, we need to fight these so we don't lose everything in one fell swoop. But I think our biggest problem is small town America. How may small towns already have "exotic animal bans" and how many more pass them every year? The town right next to mine has one. How long until my town jumps on the wagon? It won't matter if there is not a federal ban on reptiles when every small town in the country has an ordinance saying you can't have them. And these are hard to fight because you hardly ever even know of them until they are passed by a very few people in some small town hall!!!

You can always start up a pit bull puppy mill and the government will have no problem with that

(Disclaimer - I have nothing against pit bulls but had to use something as an example and with the recent M. Vick stuff it seems appropriate)
