Mushrooms

Bdimas Sep 15, 2003 06:01 PM

Hello all!

Just wondering if you guys ever have mushrooms growing in your vivs? The coco hut in my Luec tank is almost totally coverd in moss, and recently mushrooms have been growing on it. They only last a few days because my frogs crush them.

I have had mushrooms pop up in most of my tanks (the ones that haven't been disturbed for awhile). it isn't anything to worry about, and i actually like them. i am interested in trying to get more of them to appear... anybody have any good ideas about that?

There was a nice article in reptile mag this month about beneficial bacteria, fungi and things and how they combat the bad ones. Interesting info about the shrooms. I love them myself and would allow them to grow in the dartfrog tank as they seem to not have any threats to our carnivorous amphibs, and add to the naturalistic feel of the viv. Unfortunately, when they pop up they only last momentarily. I looked into having ceramic ones made because I love them so much!

I collected mushrooms in the woods put them in a bag with my vivarium mix to intoduce the spores and then put the vivarum mix in my viv. Now I have 4 kinds of mushrooms that pop up from time to time. They look great. If you had them pop up once then the mycelium may still be living in your viv and the mushrooms will continue to pop up from time to time.

Thanks for all the info. I really like them also and hope they continue to pop up.

sometimes the answers are so simple. i think i will try this with the next cuople tanks i set up, thanks for the great idea. now i wish i collected some while i was in south carolina, as there were some really cool types growing (some were an amazingly bright orange). oh well, guess i will have to head out to the woods this weekend... how horrible (sarcasm of course).
