My Argentines dropped...wooohooo!!!..duw

JJsBoas Jul 31, 2009 03:59 AM

Hey Everyone,

My Argentine litter dropped today!!! This was a pure BCO breeding and these little babies are actually grandkids of the big “747” who was a huge 8-9 foot BCO that was fairly well-known on the forums a few years back. I’m pretty pumped about this litter because this my first BCO breeding ever. I’ve had BCI litters the past 5 years, but this was the season for my Argies to go and they did. Plus, I was able to catch the whole birth from beginning to end.

Here is the gravid momma back in May 2009.

Here she is a couple weeks back.

When I got home at around 6pm, I went to check on her because she had been “nesting” under the newspapers since last weekend. I immediately notice that she was having contractions. I kinda freaked because I had never caught the entire birthing process of any of my boa litters before. Also, she wasn’t actually due until this Saturday (105 POS), so I was a bit worried that there would be a bunch of premies. So she actually dropped at day 103 POS.

After a few minutes of watching closely, this is what I saw.

And then they started coming.

I said a couple expletives when I saw that external yolk on that first baby that popped out. But that seemed to be the only one with any worrisome yolk still unabsorbed.

They kept coming.

And coming. Wooooohoooooooo!!!!!

Here is how they looked still in the enclosure after I carefully removed momma and some of the newspaper.

Momma didn’t put up much of a fight when I took her out. I removed her right before she had a chance to plow through the babies with her head, at which point I think she would’ve taken my head off with. She surprisingly only gave a half-hearted hiss when I put her a clean enclosure. That was a big relief, believe me, because the last thing I wanted to deal with was a pissed off Argie momma that had just given birth. She’s doing well and took a nice XL rat as her first meal in months.

Here are cool pics of the babies. I love the ones where they are all just poking their heads up out of the sac.

Well, thanks for reading my long-winded pictorial of a very exciting day. I’m pretty psyched about this litter. So far, they all look good. I’m leaving them in the enclosure over night or even until they start to move out on their own. Even that one yolk baby seemed to have absorbed quite a bit of yolk since being born. I’m still keeping my eye on him/her though. There are others with somewhat big bellies but nothing I’m too worried about. For being 2 days earlier, they look pretty darn awesome in my humble opinion.

This has been a great year once again for boas and we’ve seen some pretty new and cool stuff this year. Congrats to everyone who’s had such great litters and good luck to those still expecting.

All the best,

Jay

Huge congrats Jay! That is a wonderful series of pictures too. How neat that you got to see the entire birth! I remember Fred's 747, very cool to see her genes are still out there in the mix.

Thanks April,

I'm glad you and a few others remember 747. She was a monster Argie if I remember right. These babies are pretty good sized as well.

Thanks again for the kind words.

Hey Al,

I can't argue with you there. Argie babies are pretty cool. They've kinda a slate grey/marble look to them right now, and their head shape and eyes make them look "wicked" (for lack of a better term).

Thanks for the nice words.

Thanks Kev,

This litter is definitely up there among my most favorites.

Have a good one.

That is awesome and a great post as well. Congrats, and I remember 747 back when Fred A. owned her. That's been a few years.

JJsBoas Jul 31, 2009 08:43 PM

Thanks and I'm glad you remember 747. I actually bought my pair directly from Fred back in 2003 when he had a litter from 747. I've waited a long time for these two to grow up. Pretty happy with the results.

Thanks again,

Jay

That's a little while, and probably part of the reason Argentines aren't more popular. They just seem to take more time to get up to size and start reproducing. Hopefully that just makes the pay off a little sweeter. Congrats again! I'm hoping to have this guy breeding this season but I'm not holding my breath, lol. (Old pic)

JJsBoas Aug 01, 2009 01:26 PM

Nice!!!! Is that a motley BCO? If so, I'm so very jealous. It's a really cool pattern compared to other motleys I've seen, and the head shape does remind of an Argie. Awesome snake!!! Good luck and I hope he goes for you this year.

But as you noted, Argies and most other boas IMO need time to slowly mature in order to get healthy adults and healthy litters. I really didn't mind waiting 4 1/2 - 5 years for these guys to get up to the size I wanted. Plus, I super happy with the results of such patience.

Again, thanks and good luck with that motley.

Yup, produced from a pair of normal argentines. He's 3 years old, so he might go, but no rush if not. His parents should breed again this season though, so maybe they'll produce more. I'd like to breed him to a T pos. female, but she's at least another year off.

kylefrost Aug 01, 2009 03:43 AM

Awesome!!! I really had my fingers crossed for your Argies this year! I remember the anticipation of that pair years ago. Glad to see such nice results after all of that work and patience. Congrats man! Aren't baby Argentines cool!

Call me when you get a break from the books

JJsBoas Aug 01, 2009 01:22 PM

Hey hey Kyle,

Thanks, buddy!!! These baby Argies are awesome. They've got a slate gray/marble look to them. A couple also have some cool pinks as a background color (for now, at least, until the adult colors come in).

I had my last exam day this past Thurs. And, as long as I pass, I won't have to study ever again!!!!! Just work and play with boas

I want to stop by the shop some time next week to say hi and check things out. Let me what day you think is best.

Alright, time to catch up with some cage cleaning.

Talk to you soon, big guy.

Jay
