Savannah's new home (opinions please)

dekaybrown Jul 31, 2009 09:02 AM

Our Savannah "Chomper" is just over a year old now, and he has already outgrown 4 cages.

We have a massive cement basement, so I decided to just go for it and build him a 12' x 12' room, (maybe even a 12x16)

I figure the first step is to lay down radiant heat pipe, and then pour another inch or two of concrete over the radiant pipes to keep him from tearing it up.

The basement floor is always cold, so radiant will be necessary.
What temperature should I maintain the floor at?? (There will be of course a basking spot)

Then build the room using 3/4 inch marine plywood along the base of the room. (lesser building materials would be futile, I think)

Fill the room with about 18 inches of clay soil, so he can dig and burrow his brains out all day long.

One thing I have learned about this animal is he does NOT like to go potty where he lives. (I take him out every day for a potty break) so what do I need to do to give him a "bathroom"???

If I seal the bottom third correctly, I should be able to dump a few dozen monster roaches and/or mice in the room at once

a water hole big enough for him to totally lay in should be part of this project correct?

And of course a camera or two mounted in the corners for observation without interference would ice the cake nicely.

Looking forward to getting this project going, will post pics as things come together.

I would not want the floor to be less then 72F ever. I really don't think you need to build a cage that big for him though. They average around 3 to 4 feet in length. If its going to be hard to keep it warm enough you can make it smaller to hold the temps more easily and cheaply.

He is an adult now, and very energetic...

He tears up his cage all the time, and honestly my upstairs floors cannot support that much dirt.

Money is of no great concern, I would rather have a healthy monitor.

With a radiant heat pump the floor can be maintained at the proper temps rather affordably.

That way he can roam and dig all day long.

Whenever I take him outside (We have acreage) he walks (more like hustles along) sometimes a mile or more total in short order.

So I want to give as much freedom as I can while still keeping a captive enviroment.
