sullivan has an upper respitory infection. thats what i thought.

when i got sullivan they told me she was 8 weeks old so i had sullivan for a while so i figure she would be 11 or 12 weeks. nope the vet told me she was on three or 2 weeks old when i got her, so she is probably about 7 weeks old now.

Well then you have some time as Sullivan is little guy. But you should start planning for his future. Keeping an adult Sulcata in our climate is really problematic. (indoor housing can be a disasterous affair).

I work with a turtle rescue and I just tell you this because of all the sad cases we get here on Long Island. People just dumping off Sulcatas (at all times of the year) Just ringing the door bell and running.

If you plan ahead you can avoid being put in a position like this. Whether you decide to accomodate him here (which I have strong feelings about but understand that that is a truly personal decision) or look into a nice sanctuary in a warmer climate for him. Again -- no judgements or preaching here and you do have lots of time. That decision must be yours to make.

Nothing is impossible with planning and $$ to get the job done. but now that you have time on your side it will be a good idea to consider the options and what action you will take when he starts tipping the scales at 50lbs or more.

Good luck with him and please keep us posted on his progress.

i have plans to build her an outside enclosure i'll probably start it in the spring, but lets just see how she gets over her respitory infection first.

Not necessarily so. If you fill out the necessary application and send a photo of the enclosure you plan on keeping the animal in you will get approved (provided everything is in order and the enclosure is suitable for the animal as well as safe from the dogs harming the turtle).

Your mom will immediately be turned down however if she wanted to adopt a sulcata tortoise. It is a policy NOT to adopt them out in parts of the country where the climate is unsuitable for them to spend all year round outside (or outside with some protection during slightly cooler (but NOT cold) months.

The most folks from here in the East might be approved for is a TEMPORARY foster home until the sulcata could be sent out to a place where the climate is warm all year round.

We do have folks that do temp. fostering of Sulcatas. It is hard to let them go when a place comes up but they do and just as quick as that there is another one that needs to be fostered for a while.
