building my ball room

squidlyjoe Aug 01, 2009 01:10 PM

I'm in the process of building my ball python room and am curious about what others have done to insulate their own ball room. I live in the northeast and it gets quite cold in the winter. I plan on using fiberglass insulation with reflectix foil insulation over it and taping all the seams with foil tape. Any advice from those that have their own ball rooms in similar climate would be awesome.
Thanks

mmmmm heated floor

Keeps the lower tubs warmer-- since heat rises blah blah blah There is always a temp difference between top tub and bottom tub-- heated floor fixes that--- i'm always barefoot so it would keep my toesies warm while I cleaned too lol

I talked with Corey Woods. He put a post when he build his big incubator room.

One thing I asked him, was why he didn't go with heated floor and his answer was that it didn't allow him to reach the desired temperature but it would also make a gradient from bottom to top.

If my memory is right, he insolated all the walls deep and same for the flooring. And he used an electric heater placed in the center of the room.

Hello
I live Rhode Island and have built three different rooms.

First room was using the reflective with the seems taped shut. Excellent for the amount of space but looked like a space ship.

My second room was made using a thermal barrier. Basically building the room twice, one inside the either allowing little to no heat loss.

Third and final set up is the basement in my home now. I use R11 insulation with 1/2in yellow board drywall(antifungal, high humidity restitance) for the the walls. They are 4inches off the outer wall using metal studs.(no mold) I also have redirected two heating ducts into the room for heat that can be shut off during summer so no a/c gets down there. I also keep two 400w Radiant heat panels(400sqft coverage each) that I bought online tethered to Herpstat controller as extra source of heat as needed. (havent needed yet) For the ceiling I went with R30 for between the floor joyces and drop ceiling 1/2 thick tiles about four inches of the joyces.

Overall the Room measures out to 1000sqft with plumbing and three 20amp breakers just for the room. Ambient Temp during summer 72-75 during the day. During winter ambient 68-70.
Hope this helps.

Using both insulation on the walls is not a good idea due to the walls need to breath.

I'm having trouble with condensation in the walls. Next time I'm going to concentrate more on making the walls air tight. I don't think I'll use drywall at all. I'm thinking more like those shower wall panels with all the edges/corners sealed. Maybe some wood panel of some type under that just for structure but the inside surface I want to be water proof and air tight including sealing the switches and plugs. I want to control all ventilation through a duct and not have any seep of even a little warm snake air into the walls where the outer edge will be much colder causing condensation.

Google Icynene. It is a spray in foam insulation. It would fill all areas of walls etc. it is pretty strong also.

im not an expert on anything rely but ive built my fare share of buildings and set up several rooms for my snakes as ive moved alot in the past several years and temp control has always been an issue for me in the winter i live in WY and it gets cold humidity usually isnt an issue as its prity dry . and i know that the spray in foam is wonderful at insulation in cold environments, so i would agree with that as a good option, and ive always been a fan of a large enough radiant heat source for the whole room in the middle i feel it works better than any forced air systems.
just my 2 cents
