worms as beardie food?

redmoon Aug 01, 2009 06:10 PM

I'm putting together a worm farm to raise worms (either red wrigglers or European nightcrawlers) for my fish, axolotls & clawed frogs, and I was wondering if worms would be a good food for my beardeds or not. Earth worms are as close to the perfect diet as you can find for axolotls & clawed frogs (and many other amphibians), but the only thing I could find about them for beardeds said to only feed them as treats. But, this same site said that crickets are the only insect suitable for a staple diet for beardeds, and I know this to be untrue, since roaches, mealworms & superworms are all viable alternatives to crickets. There seem to be a lot of people on yahoo! answers saying yes or no, but most of them sound like morons, and I don't trust either opinion (don't buy food from bait shops because they have parasites & insecticides in them. . . even though bait shops buy from the same suppliers as pet stores?).

Thanks!

I seriously doubt earth worms are hazardous esspecially if you grow em .the red worms are not as tasty a treat as earth worms(night crawlers)at least from experience with my tropical fish farm

I know they're not hazardous- thousands of people successfully feed them to fish and amphibians. And even certain species of reptiles. But it is amusing how many people believe there's something different between what they get in a bait store and what they get in a pet store. I just don't know if they're nutritionally what beardeds need.

I'll try some crawlers with my beardies, and see if they like them. I haven't tried anything yet, as I was hoping to hear someone's opinion on whether or not they're a good diet.

Thanks for the input!
