New babies - eye problems. Advice please

PsyTech Aug 02, 2009 10:24 AM

Hello,

My boa gave birth to a clutch of new babies yesterday. Many of them seem healthy. However, two of them concerned me, as they have something going on with their eyes.

Are these birth defects? Or is there some sort of infection / disease that's going on?

Thanks for your help.

Sorry to hear about the eye problems.

It's a tough call as to whether or not it's and infection or a genetic defect.

Since the Albino gene is involved, it's possible it's a genetic defect. Of course, going by how "swollen" the normal looking Het is..... it could also be infection.

Hopefully, someone with more "first hand" experience will chime in.

Again, I'm very sorry for the problems you've had in this litter.

At least, you got some that were beautiful and healthy.

BTW were the parents "siblings"???

Jeff Ronne put me on to this. Go to bean farm's website and have them overnight you a tube of Terramycin I think it's spelled and rub ointment on the exterior of the eyes. I had an animal with the same characteristics of your non-albino one last year and it's still doing great but that eye swells up incredibly then it goes away and comes back it's very strange but it's eating, digesting, shedding and behaving normal otherwise. Trick is get the ointment on immediately. The sunglow well use the same ointment but with the albino gene also comes eye issues and the such. may be too late for this animal but have the medicAtion ready for in case of another, word is if treated immediately results are way better...

Guessing those are aregentine cross albinos??

Anyway Id' go for the suggested ointment on the eye treatment above.

I'd guess the albino's eyes are beyond fixing. It appears to have really small eye orbits. Just something that happens with the albinos from time to time. Still couldn't hurt to try and fix them also.

Put neosporin on the eye 2 or 3 times a day and dont let it dry out on the eye. There is a good chance that after a shed or 2 that the eye will be normal. This has happened to me with a few albinos and sunglows , and this really works most of the time as long as you are dilligent .
