Sick Dumeril's Boa

patness Sep 15, 2003 06:53 PM

My Boa is approximately 7 months old and has been showing some wierd signs lately. I brought him to the Vet at UF earlier today and was given 15 shots of Ceftazidime and told to give him one every 3 days. He hasnt eaten in approximately 3 weeks and is showing significant weight loss. Some symptoms are coughing, excess moisture around the mouth, weakness, vibrations while breathing, and difficulty breathing. I was wondering if I was too late to get him to the Vet and If anyone has any suggestions to help with recovery. His setup is a 20 Long tank with bed-a-beast (which I am switching for newspaper), a hide box (which I will be switching for 3 small tupperwear containers 2 with sponges), an undertank heater ( which I will discontinue using in favor of a ceramic heat lamp). I would be greatful on any input or suggestions. Thank You very much.

What are your Day and night temps, gradient, and humidity like? Generally for boids, you want to keep them really warm during repiratory infections. I have personally been told 90 degrees with 80-85 as the nighttime with no temp gradient. I have also been told that you should get the humidity up really high, but not so high that things are dripping. A water dish under your heat emitter or over your UTH should suffice, and putting a damp towell over the enclosure will help keep moisture in.

Other than that, I would question your vet's choice in antibiotics, but I'm going to assume that they know what they are doing, so you should follow their advice.

I just gave him his 2nd shot. He is still vibrating slightly when breathing and has a bruise on the bottom of his jaw which is a little bigger than the size of a dime. I havent noticed any more bubbles from the mouth. Also when he drinks he usually looks straight up almost like he was letting the water trickle down his throat. This is usually accompanied by a cough. Has anyone had similar experiences? If so let me know how it turned out and also any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Pat
