double egg hatched

boxienuts Aug 02, 2009 10:21 PM

Some may remember I posted a clutch with a double egg laid a couple months ago. Well it got pretty rotten and fungused in the middle and several times I debated just throwing it away, but decided to just stick it out, and when the other eggs started pipping I was shocked to see the one side hatching, and it was a perfectly healthy baby, the other side I cut open a few days after all the others had hatched and was surprised to see a fully formed and colored dead baby, maybe didn't cut it's way out in time,or maybe the one that hatched used up shared yoke?

THAT is pretty interesting. Did you look for a yolk sac in the dead egg?

I didn't, because after I cut a small opening in the egg and saw the baby, I left it alone for a few days just in case it might still hatch, but then it became really foul rotten and smelly, so I gave up.

I remember you posting about this egg when it was first layed. Thanks for the update. It's interesting that it twinned like that. Sorry that you lost the one, but its pretty awesome that you got a good one out of there.

Yah, I was glad and surprised to even get the one, I think most people would have just tossed them when it started turning yellow and looking rotten in the middle, heck I almost did, so maybe if someone else sees this and has this happen they will know it's not a lost cause, even if it looks really bad, because if I remember right, the consensus of the replies to my original post were that there wasn't much hope, but one poster said they hatched 2 of 3 of a triple egg actually.
