Feeding a kingsnake juv

odaacon Aug 02, 2009 11:36 PM

I've kept a ton of herps in the past, but a mexican black kingsnake is the first snake i've ever owned as a pet. I'd say he's about a foot long, and a little thinner than my pinky, and I've been keeping him on frozen pinkys. The problem is I don't know exactly how much I should be feeding him because they are so small. Whenever I see my friend's snake eat, it's a big ordeal for the snake to swallow the mouse, however, some of the pinkys are the same girth or less than the girth of the snake, and he was able to swallow one in about a minute. I've been told to just feed him one of these every four days, but it really doesn't seem like much food to me. I'm just wondering if anyone else out here with more experience could tell me what amount I should be doing.

feed it all the pinkies you have on that schedule, but try 2 next time. Get the next size (fuzzies) ready for when you run out of pinkies. feed all of those on the same schedule, start with one, increase to two after several feedings of one. Get some small hoppers ready for when you run out of fuzzies, lol! Repeat! Really, just feed the snake every 3-4 days with an adequate temperature variance and watch it grow!
