Help with ID / locality of monitor...?

swampy459 Aug 03, 2009 09:51 AM

Hey,

I'm a snake guy so my knowledge of water monitor localities is limited.

I picked this guy up this weekend, and I'm not sure where he's from. If you can give your opinion I'd like some help...

Just in case the pic doesn't show it's at this url.

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=56881&l=fa76f070b0&id=1772490464

I read that the most common water monitor seen in captivity is V.s.bivittatus but this guy doesn't seem to have bands on his neck described in varanoid lizards of the world. So I don't think its bivittatus.

Supposedly most of the V.s. salvators are from Sri lanka. What's your opinion on this -- it it salvator salvator? If you have an idea of what country it might be from let me know what you think.

It seems more speckled than a regular salvator salvator, but not enough so to be a "speckled" if that makes sense...

Anything you can tell me would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Chad

Its V.s. macromaculatus, likely imported from Sumatra or southern Kalimantan.

Not sure of the scientic name but it looks like a common Sumatran. You don't see too many s.Salvators these days.

Maybe you were thinking of Sumatra? And not Sri Lanka?

That is a very regular Sumatran Water.

I think I understand now, according to this page...

http://www.cybersalvator.com/DF/viewforumreplies.asp?cid=2&fid=2&tid=286

...All of the very regular sumatrans, and malaysian, thai, indian, chinese, vietnamese, cambodian, myanmar(ian? ese?) lizards previously known as V.s.salvator are now called V.s.macromaculatus and the only lizards still called V.s.salvator are the ones from sri lanka. Apparently all this came about after varanoid lizards of the world was published. It doesnt even mention macromaculatus as a subspecies at all.

Thanks again to everyone for the help,

Chad

btw Robyn, thanks for the advice about handling. I picked him up for the first time today. He promptly dropped a deuce on my hand, threw up some half digested crickets at me and flew back to his hide box. lol. I guess I need to take it slower.

That's a first step. Don't handle soon after eating, they boke too easily : )
