Are Shrews Deadly To Snakes?

scatmelee Aug 03, 2009 11:11 AM

i had a nelsons milk snake escape 2 weeks ago during a feeding. he is a really shy feeder. when i feed him, i slowly back away from his tank after he grabs the mouse and i wait while he swallows. when he's done, i go over and put his lid back on. if i put his lid back while he still has the mouse, he'll drop it and won't eat.

like a complete idiot, i got distracted with other things while i waited for him to swallow and he got out while i wasn't looking (no need to scold me, i feel horrible already). luckily, i found him 2 days ago crossing my driveway. i picked him up and noticed immediately that something was wrong. he looked in perfect condition but was acting very strange and unresponsive. he had a lump in his stomach and i thought he had eaten a poisonous toad or salamander (i live in s.e. pa). i worked out the food from his stomach and it was a shrew.

i put the snake back in his tank and left him alone, but in the morning he was dead. i can't figure out what could have killed him other than his meal, because his body was in perfect shape and we have had perfect snake weather. i know that shrews are mildly venomous and i was wondering if the shrew poisoned him?

has anybody ever heard of snakes being fed shrews, and if so, with what results?

To my knowledge shrews are not toxic to snakes.

That being said its impossible to tell what happened without a necropsy. The large meal caused a twist in the intestional tract, your method of removal could have caused a repture, the shrew could have consumed rat poison, wild disease...etc...etc...

Sorry for your lose...

the shrew was pretty small so i doubt twisted intestines was the problem. i gently and slowly rolled the shrew out with my thumb, the snake was trying to regurgitate it anyway, only it seemed he didn't have the strength to get it out (he was pretty limp and just barely moving). there was no blood and the shrew was only slightly digested, to where hair just started to come loose. shrews eat mainly bugs so if it ingested poison, it was most likely from insecticides. it's possible, but i'm not positive that this was the culprit either because the shrew was relatively fresh (gut contents intact).

i guess you're right, only a necropsy will tell me for sure, but i'm saving my pennies for more feeders. it just seemed weird how it died suddenly with no signs of damage. if it felt strong enough to eat (probably only the day before), what could have deteriorated him so rapidly?

thanks for your insight and compassion.

Sometimes stuff happens, we can't always explain it, learn (or attempt to learn) correct and move on.

SYS, SIDS, etc...sometimes things are just unexplained, which is why its called practicing medicine. If your still practicing then it isn't perfect...

Hopefully you got some memory pictures and learned how to better keep the buggers in the enclosure better.

Again sorry for your lose but I don't see any one thing shouting out cause of death. Its happened to everyone of use, part of the hobby we all hate most.

Best of luck in the future.

....shrews aren't good food for all critters...
....they stink and as you know are venomous.....
might have bitten the snake....it's actually very odd the snake would want to eat the shrew.....as I said...they stink....catch one sometime in a jar....man,wheeew....I put it back down real fast.....(night,no light, thought it would be a vole in the window well so I just scooped it with a jar,)...

....assuming it was a shrew....I would go with some form of envenomation....and a really odd snacking snake....
