BRB Hatchling Question

thefnshow66 Aug 03, 2009 04:04 PM

Hello,
Last week I got my first BRB hatchling. He is in a 16qt tub with two hides that are stuffed with some moss. Aspening bedding (i know this isn't recommended ) for the substrate but I'm probably going to switch to paper towels. Warm side around 83 and cool side around 80 with humidity at 88. Well He ate a F/T mouse fuzzy which was great but he didn't strike from my tongs, I had to leave the mouse in the enclosure and he ended up taking it later that night. Ever since then though, he has been staying in his hides and I never see him come out at all, even in the middle of the night. Is this behavior normal? Sometimes i think I have a dead BRB because I hardly ever see him but The only reason i know he's still alive is because i check on him when i'm going to change his water and he's flicking his tongue and moving around. I own ball pythons and they say a happy ball is one that basically hides all day. Is this also true for BRB's?

First off, I'd lower the upper temp a degree or two. I set my hatchling racks at 80 on the element or 78 (ish) in the tub.

Lil BRB's do like to hide and with a full belly will really laze around and digest. Once he's hungry again, he'll likely be out in the evening.

Hi Dave,
Well I Bought a new thermostat so my lil BRB can have his own warm side temperature instead of sharing it with my GTP's. I have yet to set it up but i plan to in a few days. Problem is, If i set my thermostat to 80 degrees or less on the warm end, the cool end will be just as warm if not warmer because my room is already around 80 degree's alone and when i come home, it can get up to 84. I don't have A/C at my place so every room in the house is like this.

I hear you on the room being warm but you don't want to always have it above 80 with the thermostat. Better it spike and go back down at night then to stay always that warm.

okay will do. Also, I noticed that my little hatchling's skin is getting a bit dull and looking at the chart you gave me, it seems like he hasen't shedded since May. Are the signs of shedding similiar to other snakes such as balls? Where they stay hidden, don't really come out at night and don't show interest in food???

rainbowsrus Aug 04, 2009 02:55 PM

Definitely due for a shed, many of his littermats have recently shed. Dull, opaque, soaking and even refusing food are signs. Although many will eat even with fully opaque eyes.

Thanks a bunch. I feel comfident he'll be shedding soon and his refusal of food yesterday was because of him going into shed. Anyways, are you going to have a booth set up at the show? I'm trying to make up my mind if i want to get another BRB but this time a female. Do you have any females around 200 dollars that are 2009 babies that are from a different clutch from the one I have?
