THE FIRST PIC IS OF A GOPHER SNAKE FROM N.W. NEW MEXICO CLOSE TO ARIZONA, I AM THINKING SONORAN BUT IT LOOKS SO MUCH LIGHTER IN COLORATION THAN ANY OTHER PIT I HAVE SEEN FROM THE AREA. A REALLY COOL LOOKING SNAKE MY OPINION, THE OTHER PIC IS A COLORADO BULL SNAKE. THANKS

Looks like a Sonoran to me, I like how the pattern is broken up on the back.

yea i agree, i need a better camera, his pattern is really grey. all the others i have seen in the are have clean patterns and lots of yellow

That Bull in the first pic looks Sonoran, but I'm guessing, that's normal, hence the name for P.c. affinis for Sonorans. I think "affinis" is Latin for similar, or something like that.

The Gopher definitely looks deserticola, or @ least like its's got some Great Basin influence init.

I really don't think you should let your snakes smoke.

The Green River over near Roswell is the theoretical divide of affinis and sayi in New Mexico ... but that is far to the South and East. I would expect your animal to be a deserticola if it's indeed from far NW Arizona.

I would have guessed that its a bull by the head shape & speckled pattern on the head. The narrow rostral is a sayi trait. Also the blotched pattern - anterior black, midsection brown, posterior black - is common in bulls. Dark blotches on affinis tend to be restricted to the posterior portion of the body.

That said, according to range maps, pits from NW NM should be affinis or a deserticola. Go figure.
